Rest is so important, yet in this day and age, people may find it one of the most challenging things to do and engage in.
The aim of rest is always to restore your energy. It's needed to support your internal battery so that you can recoup, recharge and rejuvenate your expenditure.
Just like waking up and going to work, coming home to rest is just as needed and required.
There are 6 different types of rest that you can give yourself, and I'll go through examples of each so you can take what you need!
1. PHYSICAL REST
Physical rest can be both passive and active in nature.
Passive physical rest includes things like napping and sleeping, whilst Active physical rest includes yoga, stretching and breathing.
2. MENTAL REST
Mental rest is when you give your brain a break from thinking about anything so that you can have time to just process and be.
Mental rest can include unplugging from your phone and the people around you, as well as meditation and listening to calming music like binaural beats.
3. EMOTIONAL REST
Emotional rest is when you give yourself permission to emotionally connect with yourself and express yourself. This also includes being your authentic self.
Examples of ways you can emotionally rest include: engaging in self-care tasks that you find comforting like massages or baths, hugging yourself or someone you love.
4. SENSORY REST
Reducing sensory input is what sensory rest is all about.
This could look like dimming down the lights, reducing noise, sitting in silence and limiting screen time.
5. CREATIVE REST
Creative rest includes allowing yourself to take in nature in it's full beauty. This might look like sitting at the beach, creating a painting, writing a love letter to yourself and incorporating play into your day.
6. SOCIAL REST
Some people's batteries recharge when they have positive social interactions. Sometimes others prefer to recharge their social battery by reducing their social interactions. I encourage you to reflect and see how you feel when you do both.
Depending on the above, social rest could look like talking to loved ones and your support system or spending more time alone.
So, after reading the 6 types of rest, which type of rest do you need right now?
