all things VESTIBULAR

WHAT IS IT?

The vestibular system is responsible for our sense of balance and orientation in space. It is the leading system informing us about movement and position of head relative to gravity. For some, the vestibular system can be either calming and alerting or can make us completely disorientated. The vestibular system actively helps us stay upright when sitting on the toilet so that we can meaningfully engage in this activity.

SIGNS AND CLUES THAT YOUR CHILD SEEKS THIS SENSORY INPUT

Sometimes children seek this input to help regulate their minds and bodies.

Some clues that show that they seek this sensory input include:

  • they enjoy in tumble play

  • hypermovement

  • they regularly spin and twirl when excited

  • love to jump off everything (including the couch & bed)

  • enjoys laying on the couch upside down

  • likes to climb on everything

WHAT ACTIVITIES PROVIDE VESTIBULAR INPUT?

  • swinging on the swings

  • spinning

  • sumersaults

  • climbing

  • monkey bars

  • laying/rolling on a yoga ball

If you think your child is a vestibular seeker, I encourage you to go see an Occupational Therapist who can provide you with an in depth Sensory Profile of your child and all of their sensory needs.
