How to choose the right therapist for you..

Finding a therapist to work with can sometimes be really challenging. Maybe physically there aren't any therapists nearby, or you have to wait on their waiting lists for months and even sometimes years. So when one therapist becomes available you may think... 'YES, FINALLY!'. Whilst that may provide a sense of relief in the short term, sticking with any therapist, just because they are available may not be beneficial in the long term... Let me explain.

I pride myself on developing meaningful connections and relationships with my clients. It's one of the ways I build trust and rapport with them. I have come across and met a lot of people through my work. Some of which I have been able to get along with and connect on multiple levels. On the flip side, I too have met with others where we just did not have anything in common and did not get along.

As humans, we're not always going to like and get along with everyone, however, when it comes to working alongside a therapist, I believe having common ground and mutual respect is key.

With that being said, here are 5 questions to ponder over when trying to figure out if the therapist is right for you...

  1. Do you have mutual respect for one another?

  2. Do you like being in their presence and do you find their energy to be energising or draining?

  3. Do you believe they are able to provide the skills and/or guide you to reach your goals?

  4. Do you have any common ground with them?

  5. Can you and do you want to find the time to set and prioritise therapy sessions with your therapist?

If you answered mostly YES to the above, then chances are you found the right therapist.

If you mostly answered NO then I would highly suggest looking for another therapist to work with.

Time is so precious and valuable, be sure to spend it on things/people who make it worth your while.
